The Cultivated Mind

Yatha agaram succhannam- vutthi na samativijjhati
Evam subhavitam cittam-rago na samativijjhati

Just as rain does not penetrate a well-thatched house, nor does passion penetrate a cultivated mind.

The Uncultivated Mind

Yatha agaram ducchannam- vutthi samativijjhati
Evam abhavitam cittam-rago samativijjhati

Just as rain penetrates an ill-thatched housed, passion penetrates an uncultivated mind.

The Untruth and the Truth

Saran ca sarato natva- asaran ca asarato
Te saram adhi gacchanti- samma sankappagocara

They who see truth as truth and untruth as untruth, will see truth because they entertain right thoughts.

Mind devoid of defilements

Yo ca vantakasav’assa- silesu susamahito
Upato damasaccena- sa ve kasavam arahati

Whoever dons the saffron robe with mind purged of all defilements restrained and truthful, he indeed is worthy of the saffron robe.

Mind full of defilements

Anikkasavo kasavam-yovattham paridahessati
Apeto damasaccena- na so kasa vam arahati

Whoever dons the saffron robe with mind full of defilements unrestrained and untruthful- never is he worthy of the saffron robe.

Controlled Mind

Asubhanupassim viharantam- indriyesu susamvutam
Bhojanamhi mattannum- saddham araddhaviriyam
Tam ve na pasahati maro- vato selam’va pabbatam

Whoever does not give into sense-object, restrained moderate in eating, full of faith, full of strength-mara cannot overpower such a man even as the wind cannot move a mountain.
